Red pandas are very skilful and one of the most acrobatic animals known. Their habitat is mainly in the Eastern Himalayas and there are fewer than 10,000 animals left.
The diet of the Red Panda consists for 98% out of bamboo. These plants show mass flowering followed by die off. Red Pandas will not readily find new feeding grounds in a highly fragmented landscape and are exposed to other threats when crossing unsuitable habitat. Red Panda’s are highly susceptible to canine distemper which is lethal to them. An increase in illegal trade over the preceding three years, because of interest in Red Pandas skins and meat, is also a major threat to the vulnerable population.
